08/30/2008#193  "The Lighthouse"

I have a problem with portraits of seascapes. You know, the kind of pre-framed prints one purchases at the grocery store to "spice" up their home's decor.

Lighthouses, archaic sailing vessels, crashing waves, they lack any legitimate connection with contemporary mainland society. There's nothing romantic about a seascape (unless you go for scurvy). It's all a farce, no more real than a Renaissance Fair or the covergirl on Cosmo.

Sure, one could argue there still exist coastal societies where lighthouses and the raging seas are relevant, but to that I counter: they probably have windows.

I wanna marry a lighthouse keeper...
